This is a terrific message. I am going to blog about it and send to my inner circle of folks. What a perfect time for this - Fall is arriving (feel that crisp air in ATL this morning people?) and this is a wonderful template for getting back to our priorities after a relaxing summer.

The difficult conversations are easy to put off. I don't love them, but for me the phone call is easier than the filing.

I too have found the "I'll just ask you" approach works. Here's a column I wrote about <a href="http://www.lisamcleodblog.com/?p=880" rel="nofollow">"Fierce Conversations"</a> It's a great book, I got so much out of it, it really helps you handle those challenging conversations.

Actually I'm very organized but always striving to do better. The biggest downfall on my personal or professional "To Do List" is making that one difficult phone call...to the health insurance company, to my ex-husband, to a difficult vendor, to the demanding customer, to the co-worker who lacks work ethic &/or skills (it'll be easier and faster if I just do it myself and avoid them.) Procrastinating on these occasional "UGH!" phone calls often delays other projects finishing and generally annoy me because they continue to hang over my head.

I've made big strides recently in large and small situations when it would be easier to stew about an issue because I don't want to talk about it/don't know how to dance around the issue. Now I'm beginning these difficult conversations with "I've got a very awkward question to ask and I don't know how to couch it, so I'll just ask you..." It's works amazingly well.

I completely related to this article. I actually have a mantra that I say to myself and share with my friends...."get the story out of your head!". 99% of what causes stress, negative energy and anxiety is a story I create in my head about the situation. Being aware of it helps....but interestingly enough....the stories never stop creeping into my brain. I am just more aware that they are "stories" now. The challenge is definitly filling my brain with good stories!

I LOVE this article on bad stories we keep repeating! It is SO TRUE! I get stuck in the same old rendition of what happened -- but it's only my version of it. The only way to unhook myself is to remember it's all a perception anyway.

What is equally difficult is the stories others tell about us -- they too are disheartening and disempowering! Let's hear it for dropping all old stories entirely and living new, empowering one's!!! Trish

This was very helpful for me. I am feeling uncertain in several areas of my life, and this was just what I needed at this time.

I enjoyed your article and I totally agree. I definitely feel more confident when I like what I am wearing and feel comfortable in what I am wearing....and it definitely shows in my performance. Now....the challenge is finding the time to shop for all those great clothes with a busy work schedule, two small children etc! I wish I enjoyed shopping online...

I think we can still dress for confidence even when we're casual. I may be kind of old school, but for me it's about tailoring and fit. I can do a Steve Jobs and wear a black turtleneck and jeans, but if they're high quality and they fit well, I'm still on my game.

But I do have to say, not as on my game as I am in a suit. Maybe I spent too much time in the eighties, I just feel more powerful in a jacket.
